CLUB HISTORY

New Victoria Cricket Club play in Southport, a seaside resort, in the northwest of England, about 20 miles north of Liverpool. The club was formed in 1952 by players who had previously belonged to the Victoria Methodist Church cricket team.

The club plays in the Southport & District Amateur Cricket League which is a 3rd grade league in the England and Wales Cricket Board system, and covers a radius of 20 miles inland from Southport. At present the league has four divisions with 12 clubs in each.

We have approximately 30 senior players and sixty junior players and play our home matches on a public park called Crossens Recreation Ground at the north end of Southport. Our pavilion doubles as a Community Centre for the local area, it has social and changing facilities. We socialize in a local pub after matches.

New Victoria have two adult teams in the Southport Amateur League, the 1st Xl playing in the Premier Division and the 2nd Xl in Division 4. The senior games are played on Saturday afternoons with cup matches on some Sunday afternoons. Each team plays an average of 22 games per season.

Our junior section has grown rapidly in recent years and in 2007 we will have teams in all four age group leagues – Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 18. These teams play about 10 evening matches each per season of 20 overs each side. The junior teams all play in the Southport Junior Cricket League. Some of the older junior players also play in the 2nd Xl on a Saturday afternoon. A number of our senior players have obtained coaching qualifications in order to coach the junior teams.

In the past the following honours have been achieved – 1st Xl  won Division 3 in 1989 and 1999 and the 2nd Xl won Division 3 in 1967 and Division 5 in 1989. The 2nd Xl have been runners up in their cup competition in 1999 and 2005. Our Under 11 team have won their league twice and their cup once in recent years. In 2006 the Under 15 Xl won Division C of their league.

We would describe ourselves as a lower ranking club where everyone enjoys their cricket without being too competitive. This enables people who would not be able to get in to one of the bigger clubs to have the opportunity to play cricket at a reasonable cost.

In recent years we have spent a lot of effort in developing our junior teams and have achieved a ‘Clubmark’ award from the England Cricket Board to enable more local young people to play cricket.
